What's so important about the Color of the year? Why do we need to pay attention to it? Why are there so many options and do we really need to use them? How do they know which color to select as Color of the year? With so many options, it can be challenging to keep track of these colors and figure out how to incorporate them in your environment! Fortunately for you, you have a designer who can help you make sense of it all, I mean it's what I love to do!  Like most designers, I have my favorite paint companies, and I tend to recommend them for my projects, really, if it's not broke, why fix it! Here they are their selections for Color of the Year 2018 and how they compared with 2017:

My go-to sources for paint or color resource: 1. Benjamin Moore 2. Sherwin Williams 3. Behr and for color info 4. Pantone. Here is a comparison of 2017COY and 2018 COY.

Pantone's color of the year was global and many media outlet highlighted the 2018 selection of Ultra Violet!  However, to be fair, I did a bit of research, (so you don't have to) and compiled a dozen colors with the coveted title, "Color of the Year"! Who comes up with this? Did you know that color trends are predicted months before the actual Color of the year selection? Pantone is the leader in researching, identifying and understanding color, they actually call themselves, "the global authority of color". They even created the CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) color system to create a uniform way to categorize and use color in our lives and our environment, so that it is consistent across print, media, textile, and manufacturing industries!

When a color is determined, color guides, trend reports, and lookbooks are created across these industries as the basis for future designs and products. The Pantone Color Institute is the place for research and is responsible for the annual Color of the year announcement since 2000! Pantone's research is disseminated throughout the world and according to them, selected colors are simply an indication of the status of the world, expressing "the attitudes and emotions of the times".

There are a few more color research institutes like the Color Marketing Group but each paint company selects their own color based on their internal branding, messaging and their customer's tastes.  So, I did a pageant show of sorts, lining them up and presenting my top 2018 Color of the Year palette and can I tell you, there were some great color options included.

The "Miss Confidence" prize for stand out bold and dynamic color of the year goes to: Benjamin Moore's Caliente, a surprising jump from their 2017 pick, Shadow!  Caliente is not for the faint of heart, it's a brilliant red with a vibrancy that energizes any design.  My motto with color is, Go big and bold or don't bother! Caliente is like your favorite red lipstick, you only use it if you want to be noticed but if you really want to be a stunna, wear that red dress, yes that one! I will go more detailed posts with design tips and color pairings.

Still hung up on the black or black and white trend, check out PPG and their family of companies, Glidden and Olympic, they are keeping the love of the dark side going with Black Flame, Black Magic, and Deep Onyx! We will continue to see those black, luxurious walls for 2018 especially when enhanced by architectural millwork or painted in a striped pattern to provide visual texture and a great backdrop for some beautiful decor!

So this is the end of part 1 of the 2018 Color of the Year Pageantry, where some bold takes are highlighted and more is yet to come! I still haven't let you know which ones are my favorite and are best for some Tropical Love! I also arranged these colors in terms of design themes, so you can incorporate a few with your design style. Feel free to comment and share!
